where do people get the 'secret codes', stuff like *#**778# - I see these codes everywhere on forums, but nobody ever says how they got them.
Are these leaked from developers? Is there a pattern to them?

nah.
some people who have worked with cell phone companies in the past learn these codes from phones.
I do remember from way back when all Nokias and Motorolla phones had special universal codes. I don't know if that's still the case.
one of the codes i do remember typing regularly was '*#639#* [ Send ]'

that looks like an LG "hack" (could be wrong though) either way, its not a hack. Yes, you can "hack" things. i modified my LG Env, my Motorloa A630, and my Motorola V600. I hacked the Env to get free navigator and free internet when tethered to a computer.
I haven't seen anything with hacking blackberries though. Either way, I getting used to the storm.

see, I'm trying to unlock a prepaid Motorola phone and, as I thought it would be, it's pretty damn difficult - I made a data cable for it but even Motorola's own software does not see it because, apparently, Motorola locked the com port and nobody anywhere knows how to unlock it, which does not seem plausible to me.
There's also the test point in the back, but I don't have the tools for that...

There are reports that Infinity Box can unlock C168, but I'm thinking it's not the AT&T version, plus Infinity Box costs like $300 (and an unlocked version of the phone can be ebay ed for $40).
I'd go with the test point route, but I don't know enough about it (short circuiting, right?)

By the way, the secret codes make sense: for example, *#**797* is the code for the SYStem log, and 797 makes "sys" on the keypad; *#**837# is the code for software VERsion - same thing on the keypad...
