Defend your genre

We all know by now that everyone who listens to EDM is assigned a particular genre. I used to be a big fan of Melodic Trance, but when it started getting homosexual, poppy, and had nothing but vocals, I lost interest. I have recently immersed myself into the world of psy, and of the 3 major types, I prefer full on over all of them (obviously). I like full on psy because it explores entire spectrums of sound, has a rolling beat and bassline that makes you want to dance, and generally has solid, well-structured melodies/riffs. Plus, it sounds cool. From a perspective of a producer, psy trance should be admired at least for some of the amazing sounds that artists make with their synthesizers.

Why do you like your genre? I for one cannot understand House music. I just don't get it. It's not very minimal, but it's not very varied either. It's pretty groovy, but I just don't really see how it's so popular these days. I'm not trying to trash the genre at all, I just don't really see why people like it so much.

TA's thoughts?

Well when you say House are you referring to straight-up House music? Or Progressive, Electro, Minimal, Tech House, etc... as well?

I suspect you'll find it challenging to defend a genre that doesn't exist.

I know there are a billion different styles of House, but Tech, Minimal, and Progressive House are what people mostly listen to, right? It all depends on taste, but I was just wondering why you guys like it so much? From a technical, or musical standpoint, why does it appeal? Again, I'm not trying to piss off anyone, just asking questions.

psy-trance is the most well structured style of EDM music. even those who don,t like it should at least acknowledge that it is the most well produced style and also most diversified.

Ambient?

Also must say, I quite like progressive house (so long as its reasonably long and decent) now. I guess house is like the genre between uptempo (140bpm+) stuff and downtempo (120bpm-)... so its sometimes useful for those moods.

What does it mean that a style is "well structured"?

fail. Full on somewhat compared to other stuff, however theres certainly much worse, and the simple fact that its usually over 6 minutes means the songs have to have a well layed out structure and idea to keep them interesting for that long.

Well I guess with psy theres certainly a lot more effort put into synth programming, hence why you see much more varied sounds... as well as sounds that actually change along with the melody/groove and change throughout the song. Again, this isn't true for all psy... some of its starting to become more similar, and less effort put into, but thats the stuff I want to get away from and don't like anyway.

Well I'd say probably not but, examples of more varied genres?
