I still have the HD280 Pro's in use - are these an update or are they not really intended for monitoring?

Yes it's listed for both monitoring and dj'ing purposes on the Sennheiser website.

It looks like the HD555 has a more linear frequency response on the lows though if I look on the Headphone website (http://www.headphone.com/). The other characteristics seem less.
