Devices and Chimes..

Not so long ago, Nick Muir was listening to one of his beloved
Orbital CD's when on came the classic 'Chime'. It occurred to him that he would love to hear this tune played out but there was not much chance as the style of the mix belonged to a different era...at which point he had a proverbial light bulb moment; hell, I'll do my own version he thought.

He set to it, replaying all of the key elements and recreating a version that would stand up with the current sound of now and in a couple of days it was done. Nick gave the mix to a couple of close mates and thought nothing more of it. A few weeks later, Hernan Cattaneo sent an email to Nick explaining that he had played the mix out in Buenos Aires to 12,000 people and the place went absolutely nuts; seemed like the idea was a good one! The mix got handed around between the DJ fraternity - Nicks old friend and studio buddy John Digweed frequently gave the mix an airing, as did Dave Seaman, 16 bit Lolitas and many others.

Other mixes of Chime followed, notably the Shapeshifters: Paul Woolford also did his own mash-up using the tune. And wouldnt you know it, Orbital recently announced their return to the live scene. Maybe they were in part reminded of the classic nature of their catalogue by the current crop of reworks... but Nicks version remained unavailable - until now! Yes the mix is now bought to you by Device recordings, just in time for a good ol christmas and new years knees up, After all as Nick himself says, 'Its a bloody great tune innit?'

Heh. Digweed was spinning this already in spring '07 so i'd say more than 1.5 years is pretty long ago in the EDM world if a track's release is considered.

Never heard the full length version so can't say much but the various clips i've heard haven't really impressed me that much.. it doesn't seem to go anywhere, unless that's the idea. Maybe hearing the full mix will change my mind.
