well for me when it comes to making my own sounds/patch's it's all to do with trail and error. just play and play,use your vsts untill you make something you like.

I think Massive is a very cool synth; I have made it my go to VSTi and I try to program all my sounds on it. As for literature, there is a lot available online; I suspect others will be able to provide some good resources. Finally, I find the folks over at the KVR forums extremely helpful when it comes to sound design; highly recommended

The first Vst synth I thought was easy to use was V-station you can get really cool sounds out of that very quickly.

If you are serious about learning synthesis i would get either a roland juno 6/106 or a nord lead 2. Every single parameter is layed out on the front panel, they sound great (especially the juno) and are very very easy to use and learn subtractive synthesis on.
