Hearing Test

Okay, I'll be short here...

- Got my hearing tested in a shopping mall by some claims company.

- Environment wasn't great (could still hear outside noise, clutter , etc.) But the guy said it was within 5dB of a sound proof room (not sure about this.)

- I told them I DJ/Produce, but do not work in a noisey environment, so they had no incentive to sell me anything but offered me a hearing test any way.

- The result: My ears are fucked. Speech (2-5khz) is normal to above normal when taking into account back ground noise, but around 8khz my hearing is very, very bad. Like 35db below normal!

The guy said he'd worked in engineering for 38 years and his ears aint that bad. A DJ was also in earlier and had similar results.

Any of you guys had one done? Pretty scared now, but thank fuck for stem cell research and nano technology (I am confident we will be able to replicate any human organ sucessfully within my lifetime)

I had my first hearing test done a couple months ago. I have really bad tinnitus so the results didn't surprised me. Up until 1kHz my hearing is normal. I have a 20dB dip at 2k, 10dB dip from 4-5k, and a 15dB dip 8k and higher. Not really the best condition you want your ears to be in at 27 years old.

I don't have tinnitus. I can easily hear that really high sound made by CRT TVs, so I'd imagine that my high-freq. hearing isn't too bad. Who knows, though, since I haven't had any professional tests done.

I can as well mate.

But it's the volume at which you can hear that.

It's pretty high coming out of tv's etc.

No left turn, I feel for you.

But I am confident we will have a cure within our life times, so worry not!

Others?

I'm getting old

My hearing has been a recent concern of mine as well. Several of my friends that are DJs/producers have custom made earplugs. Amazingly they say these can actually hear things better because my avoidance of these types of things has always been that it would hinder what I'm hearing. My friend who had them recently told me you mail off a mold or something and they mail you these custom ones. Costs around 100 bucks he said. I'm thinking I should look into this. I'm getting older and I don't see the loud music going away anytime soon.

You were recorded as a 60 year old ex-miner from yorkshire , just to hit there targets.

I see these thing in shopping centers all the time.

Not sure if you should take this too seriously but if you are i would persue a proper test , book in at the doctors or see a proper specialist.

+1 man

i wouldn't take a shop's advice
get to a doctor, and then if there actually is a problem i'm sure they'll be able to tell you what to do about it as well

I tested myself with a tone generator and I had no trouble hearing stuff at 14,000 Hz even at very low volume. When I go above that it gets a bit tough. I can still hear a bit at 16,000 or slightly higher.

Last hearing test I took, I had pretty good results, but it was far from professional. I suppose I could get a doctor to take one for me. I wouldn't trust a shop, though.

I'm alright to 16.5 khz, but after that... I'm only 18 too, which is even scarier. I think I'll be deaf by 40. Pretty scary when music is your life.

This is interesting.

As mentioned they said they couldn't make a claim for me anyway, they also took my details (d.o.b, address, etc) so perhaps I will be getting custom made ear plug info/hearing aid shit sent via post now?

I was just shocked cause my hearing really did have a worse frequency response on the graph than a budget pair of behringers.

I'll get a pro test done for peace of mind/change of lifestyle if it really is as bad as it looks.

But tbh I am also quitely optimistic that in 20 years time with the rate tech is advancing, there won't be much that isn't curable.
