I feel sorry for York U students

I would go ballistic if I lost a semester. I haven't kept up on the discussion and debate, but do you think it will be done before December 15th (York U students here??)? That has been labeled as 'drop-dead date' for classes. What have you been doing in the interim? Does any of your funding extend for provisions like this? Oh man, my heart goes out.

when york manages to do 5 years straight without a strike, that will be the day all theories of space will be null and void

i'd be absolutely livid too .. just imagine some of the implications

- graduating later resulting in potentially lost wages
- being ineligible to attend graduate school in Sept. if you're in your 4th year because you can't finish on time
- students who are staying in housing having to incur additional rent
- student loans accruing interest during the time of the strike
- economic impacts to other nearby businesses who depend on students to help their bottom line
- inability to take summer school
- disrupting the flow of learning
- screwing your plans for a winter or summer vacation/holiday should classes spill over

I mean really the losers at the end are the students and not York or the union so I think there's less pressure on the 2 sides to come to an agreement since the majority of the fallout falls squarely on the students.

My brother is at York right now and I keep telling him that the Student's Union should really start looking at possible legal action, i.e. class action lawsuit if a case exists for it

I've just taken on extra hours at work and been working full-time.
Trying to look at any possible positives (ie. extra cash, time off)

Had to cancel my cuba trip for reading week.
I can't book my flight to Poland to see my grandma with the rest of my family because I have no idea when they will schedule 2nd semester exams.
Money for residence is basically in the toilet.
If they extend into May then I will miss the first 2 weeks of my internship ... aka I lost it.
I won't complete my program in 2 years like I planned.

I love how a majority of the conflict is being put up by TA's whose grounds for striking are because they don't make enough money to live above the poverty line. I would like someone to name a job that earns enough salary to live above the poverty line working 10 hours per week.

I feel REALLY sorry for international students... at least my home is only about an hour away and I can work during the strike period.

Yeah, I feel bad.

I went to York and graduated a year and a half ago from there.

There was 2 threats of strikes when I was there I believe. Both times the it went right to the strike deadline, but they were both resolved!

But yeah, i still have quite a few friends who are in there graduating year this year (attempting too) and are screwed.

It can even set a lot of people back an entire year, especially with full year-courses and those that are split into semesters (Fall Semester is course I, Winter semester is course II. But Course I isn't offered in the Winter, and you can't take course II without Course I...so you have to wait until the following year).

I would personally be pissed off.

Especially if you think of the opportunity cost of school. You lose half a semester of tuition (my friend who's at Glendon informed me they were getting a bit of a refund on the year they lost) + 1/2 year - 1 full year of income...especially if you take the present value of how much you would lose based on an annual raise every based on the salary you missed.

Even if there the Student Union decides to take legal action, you can't get that semester back.

When our school went on strike I definitely thought of the positives as well. My study group met regularly too and kept on with the readings, so when we finally got back we didn't have to do any readings for over a month. It gave me a chance to get a lot of thinsg done that I've been pushing off b/c of school.

I was in first year during the last strike which lasted over 2 months...it was horrible but profs surprisingly had sympathy & helped us make our deadlines. Luckily, I ended up finishing the year on time....but I completely understand what students are going through right now...
