I actually think you should buy the best value for money computer, and if you have money left over, put it aside for the more powerful computer that will be released a year or so down the track.

You'll want to build it yourself to save loads of cash and get better components. Also, in a year or so time when new more powerful whatever comes out you can buy just that part assuming it is compatible no need to new computer.

Processor speed, memory, audio interface etc are all critical, but I'd argue that there is an even more important aspect to consider...
Stability.
I find nothing kills creativity faster than an unstable computer that crashes all the time. I'd rather have a P4 2ghz with 512mb ram running completely stable, than a bleeding edge quad core machine that blue screens or crashes out of Cubase every two minutes.
Without meaning to sound like an Apple zealot, since moving over to a MBP and Logic 8 I've had no stability issues at all. It's been great!
