religion does have to go... it's a shackle to the human race.. holding us back from advancing to the next level... it was a great tool for herding the masses during the more barbaric eras but we slowly have to fade it out... religion is a virus...

Religion is a personal thing.
Though you may not agree to it does not make it unnecessary.
Considering the percentage of people on this planet that are of a religion compaired to atheists, one would have to pretty naive to think religion doesn't play a role on this planet.
But these are just my thoughts.
I don't think the question is whether religion is good or bad, but more how it used by the people in which it serves.
People don't serve a religion; religion serves a people.
If it didn't, it would be a cult.

Well I personally am not a religious person and have great difficulty understanding why or how people could or would be religious. (please don't try to convince me, i've heard it all before... )

I don't have a problem with religious people or religion itself, I think that it can be a good thing if it teaches people basic values like responsibility, mutual respect and tolerance. HOWEVER, when people begin to misuse religion for political purposes, it does become a problem.

Eg: fundamentalists (and I'm talking about fundamentalists of ALL religions). I'm not sure where any deity has said it's a good idea to kill people of other religions. Makes you wonder why people do kill others in the name of religion. Poor misguided people.

Just my 2c

there is a lot of truth to that.. but the thing is religion breeds the lust for power and control... and the way our society is set up, power and control come at the cost of a heavily polluted environment.. without religion we could be a better human race... we could live in what we consider paradise ON EARTH instead of being sheep and thinking that if you obey your government and religion that you'll go to paradise when you die... imagine what our life would be like if religion NEVER existed... and we somehow found a way to coexist unbarbarically... we could have life spans double or triple that of our current expectancy....

p.s.is barbarically even a word?

Me saying anything isn't gonna change anyone's mind, so you guys might as well criticize religion all you want, but if you're gonna do it don't say stupid things. Religion holds us back from advancing to the next level? Religion breeds the lust for power and control? Without religion we could be a better human race? Without religion we could live three times as long? Without religion we could live in paradise on Earth?

I reallllllllllllllly hope you're joking. This is the most ridiculous shit I've ever heard in my life.

PS: Religious people don't misuse political power. Maybe people that think they're relgious, but that's a different issue altogether.
