unless you're prepared to buy a lot of hardware, linux is horrible for music - there are very few plugins available and they are almost all of poor quality.

don't bother.

linux is great for servers, but horrible for desktops unless you just want to do basic shit... but even then, Open Office isn't 100% compatible with MS Office, GIMP is a joke in comparison to Photoshop, Aptana and NetBeans aren't in the repos of most distros... etc.
