Question Are tribute mixes totally lame?

Well?

I think I just decided to put one together, but was struck by the notion that most tribute mixes I've ever heard (sans a handful posted here on TA - System-J's mixes come readily to mind) have been absolutely fucking pants.

So, what do you all think?

My inclination is that they can probably go either way - no real middle road to speak of - they'll either be total shit or epic win.

What kind of tribute mix are you planning on doing? A tribute to an artist? An old genre?

To a single producer with many aliases.

Keeping it tight lipped til I'm done, as I have an inkling it's a good choice and I'm trying to keep your interest piqued

it varies for me. i can appreciate a tribute mix if there's enough varied material to go through. let's say someone makes a tribute for future sound of london or something similar.. i'd listen to that if it represented pieces from their whole discography. i'm really sceptical to more recent tribute mixes for people like trentemoller, prydz and sean tyas for instance..

Cool bro, I kinda have an idea of who it is...let's see if I was right when you post it

Generally, an artist has a similar sound or "vibe", if you will, on his tracks. So I think this actually makes it easier to mix/program, etc. So I guess it will come down to picking the right tracks, which I'm sure you'll have no problem with.

This is definitely a veteran. His first record was released in 1993 or 94, if I'm remembering right.

Prepare to be surprised

I don't think this one would be all that predictable to anyone, but I wound up playing a set of his tunes this morning between shifts, recording it, and realizing how much I fucking love the guy.

Hopefully it won't take long to complete - already have a loose tracklist.

Awesome, if you just realized how much you love the guy then it's definitely not the guy I was thinking of, lol

Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

I suggest Ligaya as your set closer!
