any advice for carrying vinyls overseas/airplane?

Hello all...any tips? Like anyone else i dont want my vinyls getting all warped and messed up because of stupid mistakes like packaging. Any tip or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and by the way, my flight is gonna last about a total of 18 hours...if that makes a difference? Thanks all.

It depends on what airline you are flying. Some will allow you to take a softcase containing a whack of vinyl onboard which you, but most won't.

You'll probably have to get a hard case and get it marked as fragile and put into the hold. I've got a flight to Vancouver, via Hong Kong which works out to 24 hours of solid flight time and I've got about 120 vinyl that need to go with. Airline is Cathy Pacific and I have been told that I am not allowed to bring a softcase onboard with me as it is too heavy, Soooo.... I have to either take a hard case and put it in a luggage or it'll be sent with Cathy Pacific cargo in a hard case (which is probably what I am going to do).

Where you going and what airline?

Oh cool, thanks for the advice widget cause coincidently my airlines is cathay too. Im going from los angeles to hong kong to my destination taiwan. So where do i get the hardcase at? And once i pack it, do i just stuff it in my luggage? How do u mark it as fragile too...the same place u turn in your bags? Oh i heard they the limit is only like 2 60 pound bags too...is that true? Heh, sorry for all the questions...its my first time on a plane. Thanks

okay, my allowances for Cathy are 2 x 32kg cases.
Cathy also have a really cheap cargo service which might be preferable for you. For this you need to contact Cathy about 10 days before your flight.

Okay, you can get a hard case from pretty much most DJ stores. You should be able to get from most DJ stores in LA.

Phone Cathy before hand and confirm that they will allow you to mark items as fragile when you get to the airport. When you book your luggage in, then you must request for a fragile sticker to be placed on it. Depending on how booked the flight is, they may allow you to be a little over weight, but again you need to phone Cathy and check with them on capacity.

If you only have a couple of vinyls with you, then buy a soft case/bag (again from any dj store) and take it on as hand luggage, but check with the airline what hand luggage limit is. This is the BEST METHOD, since the vinyls will be with you all the time.

Unfortunately all airlines have tightened up on their luggage rules since Sept last year.

Any other questions, just yell.

depends on how many vinyl you want to take and what the carry on luggage weight allowances are like. The will probably allow you a couple of vinyl if it's in a bag that can fit in the over head compartment. Most airlines no longer allow you to place stuff at your feet.

Again, phone the airline and find out what their weight + size limits are for luggage. Everyone is different. I haven't ever taken vinyl on an internal US flight and haven't even flown one in a couple of years....

Thumbs up

Insure everything you take. Tiesto's vinyls got stolen while he was on an airplane and same thing happened to Oakenfold...
Lock the case.

Hey Hitokiri ^_^x

No problem. I just bought a hardcase yesterday for my trip in August.
