So if I understand there is no way to record in 256 kbps with Traktor?

Nope,
It's alot more taxing on your laptop/computer to convert on the fly from wav to mp3. It's a lot easier to just record in wav and then convert afterwards. Though hard drive space is the only requisite if you do record like this, as you stated the files are HUGE!
Audacity is quite a popular recording/converter application on here.
There are others but i can't remember them off hand.

Traktor only records to wav, and as n3lly points out, you wouldn't want it to convert to mp3 on the fly.
Get the audacity, get the lame-encoder and you can convert your wav into an mp3-file up to 320 kbps.
