Yeah, headphones does improve your finese in beat matching a heck of a lot. If the mixer allows it I only use the headphones, but you must be able to adapt if this is not the case (there are some mixers out there!!!!).
Speaker position is vital, if they arent pointing at you you won't hear everything as project has already said, but also the low sounds tend not to rise in height as easily as it drops in height, therefore you should try and have your speakers above you to hear the lows better!
