brian eno - an ending (ascent) thread #2496

Regarding the aforementioned song, I have listened to a number of Eno's cds n other works (can't recall any now) but have yet to find a piece that matches the etherreal feeling this song invokes. Has anyone come across his work that does.

Sidenote yet similarly stirring song, took forever but I finally found the version of Moby's God moving over the face of the water that was in the movie Heat, which is quite different from album version, both blissful. The edit wasn't even on Heat soundtrack which I found annoying.

Some of the other pieces on Apollo Atmospheres and Soundtracks have a similar spacey, ethereal vibe to "An Ending," I think. Others are darker and grittier.

It seems like a number of people get to know Eno through "An Ending (Ascent)" and then are frustrated when they find that a lot of his other work is darker and less conventionally structured.

My favorite album of his is probably Ambient 4: On Land.

Eno's best album is "Before and After Science" (1977).

"An Ending (Ascent)" is a bit sugary, really. It works in the context of the album (Apollo) as a shift in mood and it's a nice little piece of music, but i wouldn't rate it above any other track off that same album. "Under Stars" / "Under Stars II" / "Stars", THAT'S ethereal.

Maybe you should listen to some other Eno albums attentively enough to actually remember what you listened to.

i actually dl that album now that you've mentioned some of the track names. Nice song but was not all that interested in them. Guess it just comes down to taste at some point.

Also, its not that I'm disappointed that I couldn't find other similar material because I think Eno is a top notch producer for the work he does.

Finally, surprised people would find this track sugary. I find it very introspective, but then again I just watched Traffic for the umpteenth time, which finally comes out on blu-ray soon.

Nice. Where did you find this version? I have the Heat soundtrack and it has the original version as you say. The one on the film has some new key changes and a different arrangement. Incidentally that end scene coupled with the music is the finest piece of film making ever.
Check out Eno's 'Plateaux of Mirrors' album. Also Eno & Budd - The Pearl. Not hugely etherela but you will probably like it.

The actual Heat version of God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters has never been available anywhere else besides in the movie itself.

As said, the version on the Heat soundtrack CD (6:58) is just a slightly shortened version of the original. Another edited version available on various Moby releases, titled misleadingly Heat Mix (5:45) isn't the real Heat version either even if it is does feature minor differences to the original.

There have been some bad quality fanmade bootleg mp3s doing the rounds reconstructed from a clip from the movie soundtrack but that was years and years ago.

Brian Eno is brilliant
Before and after science is great if you like to hear him sing. I also love hear come the warm jets. My life in the bush of ghosts is also really interesting, it's actually a collaboration with David Byrne of th talking heads.

Personally, I am a fan of ending an ascent, but i could see how some would find it boring or uninteresting. I really need to see if he has done anything lately, I know he does music for a lot of art installations but I don't know if these are released or not

Apollo Atmospheres and Soundtracks. It's also on the Traffic soundtrack (some nice ambient IMO).
