Embarassing Question

This is going to sounds really embarassing, but I have a terrible problem with the SMELL of my headphone cups. You see, I sometimes use it straightaway after a shower so some of the spongey part of the cups become moist due to my wet hair and ears. Now both cups just smell really really bad, to the point where it becomes a chore to use it without ensuring that it gets too close to my nose. I've considered spraying a little perfume onto the cups but am afraid the alcoholic content present in perfumes might affect the long-term performance of the headphones. What do I do now? It's a Sony MDR V700DJ.

This has to be the stupidest question anyone has ever asked in the DJ Booth.

i dunno buy new headphones? and dry your head with a towel before using it?

don't know what else...you can't put headphones in the washing machine. Well actually water isn't bad for it. You could dump it in a bucket of water, then let it dry for a couple of days ( DO NOT use it in this time or you will mess up the phones)

ehhh btw if something goes wrong i'm not responsible

hmm...

my guess is the odor would be in the foam... foam is not really easy to clean, and i'm not sure how easy it would be to remove from the haedphones for cleaning.

your best bet it probably to try to detatch the foam from the speaker elements and soak it in some sort of cleaner, although i have no idea what sort of cleaner and what would not damage it.

interesting problem... i wonder if i'll have to deal with this someday on my headphones.. hehe

Don't do this! The cones in the drivers will be made of (probably) cardboard, if you put them in water the cardboard will go all soggy and misshapen!

LMAO!

well, if you ask gluegun, he will tell you the V700DJ smell bad brand new from the store, like cheese that is advertised as gourmet brie, but is really just stale cheddar.

Listening to music in headphones increases the visable amount of bacteria by 700% So basically, you've just lossend the dirt in the shower then used sound waves to pull the dirt onto the headset. So you can clean it all you want, untill you clean out your ears it'll keep coming back.

Take the earpads off and clean them...

When I got my Grado SR-60's used, they smelled like cigarette smoke, so I cleaned the earpads a few times, fabreezed them, and wiped the headphones off with a cloth with some alcohol on it (being careful not to touch the drivers or anything), and it helped a little.

I guess it's time for someone to get some sweat resistant Technics headphones, huh?

I would use some Fabreeze. That stuff should do the trick.

The sennheiser HD280 pros I've got has removable parts and you can get replacements for the foam, head band, cord etc. I love that feature because my dogs like to chew on my wires I'd suggest you either buy a new pair or use febreeze. DO NOT USE PERFUME! Perfumes do not eliminate odor, they only mask it. You can try looking for odor eater powders etc that are ment for feet too. Just make sure you apply only the amount you need and rub it all out so your head doesn't smell like your feet! You shouldn't need to worry about alcohol content or moisture etc because the foam pad should act like a filter for any arisole that you spray on it. In any event, the headphones are damn cheap to replace even if they are $100USD compared to what you spent on the mixer/decks/tables etc and what you spend on vinyl or cds!
