Is it someone taking someone elses idea and making it their own or is it someone elses view of the original song? Or is it something completely different?
Personally I think that it's a mix of the first two. If a DJ takes a song, speeds it up and maybe warps the vocals, making it sound cheaply done, taking him about 5 minutes and f****ing up the song then they're completely ripping the idea.
Then again if they reinvent a song, wether it be reinventing a classic, making crap good or just making a good song a good remix then it's amzing.
What do you think?

its someone taking a basic melody, structure, and possibly vocals, from an existing song and redoing the whole thing, the way they want.

yes exactly that
and
its a creation of an existing song, with another artists flavour
someone will remix a song to creat a different effect from that song, or to make better.
if you wanted to remix a song, you would take a song, and make it better, or different.

Remix: Making the song a different way.
Remake: Totally making a new song of out an older song.
Rework: PvD's stupid way of adding a few beats and slapping his name on a song.

in an interview tiesto said that he used "remake" because remix is used to often, so it was jsut something different. nothing to do with building it from scratch.
if you look at marc o'tool's remix of urban train, that truly is a remake, since it resemble snothing o th original and could be called, lump of shit i made by marc o'tool.
