Enterotoxigenic E. coli is responsible for 60 to 70 percent of E. coli diarrheal disease. It is the cause of what is commonly called traveler's diarrhea. The strain affects millions of people worldwide, mainly in South America and sub-Saharan Africa. Saeed says mouse and rabbit studies have succeeded, and he hopes human clinical trials can begin in late 2009.

This is amazing news.

E.Coli is one of the biggest killers in the developing world. They already had an oral vaccine (Dukoral) for it but it was only 60%-85% effective. If this actually works better, many lives will be saved.

i dont think we need to save lives we deffinately need to kill more though.

It's pretty sad that some pharm execs are drooling at the prospect of making huge bank on this once it's put into production.

i do hope that they make it affordable for the ones that need it. Dukoral definitely isn't affordable. when i went on vacation, i didn't even bother to pay for the dukoral since it was so expensive.

too late to have saved this extremely dedicated guy
