I actually watched Memento for the gazillionth time just yesterday. I'm a big fan. His ambient scores are an integral part of Nolan's films. A film like The Prestige really wouldn't be the same without the dark and suspenseful but understated music of David Julyan.
I get this feeling that the music is like a bed on which the story rests, or that it is wrapped around the movie, or permeates it. That, rather than being something that is slapped on top of the movie or reflects its themes in parallel.
I sometimes wonder what David Julyan could have done for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Not that i was disappointed with the Zimmer/Howard scores.
