what's been your latest great holiday destination?
Not even something exotic as such, maybe a great weekend getaway or what not?

Next week I'm going to Zürich for a couple days. I haven't been this excited about going somewhere in a long long time.
The last few years I haven't moved around much and so opportunities I have to get away always bring me joy.
Nevermind the fact Zürich is only an hour and half away and I have been there well over 15 times I guess, but this time I am actually staying there for a couple days and not just some overnight deal like I was going to a party.

So many places to visit, so many things to enjoy, and most of all I'll be sharing all this with Efi.

Is this part of the maturing process one goes through as they age? Gaining pleasure out of what may be perceived as basic and non-eventful?
A lot of this necessity to create excitement where there is none has been most invaluable in a city which most perceive as having nothing of value to offer. You make the place your own or you'll be bored to death.

I've also started to become nostalgic for people I haven't seen in years, the music scene I left, a life that I feel was stolen from me that I am slowly starting to regain.

I work for a travel agency, and the travel industry is completely tanking because of the economy. People are going to cheaper resorts, cheaper vacation spots, or not at all.

I will agree with you as we get older and life starts getting a routine feel and becomes rather monotonous, any sort of destination other than your home or city seems more exciting than you would have thought as a teenager or something.

Personally, I would love to travel to Ireland or Japan and get a taste of the culture on as many levels as possible. Visit their most exotic restaurants, go to their clubs and party, check out their popular landmarks or tourist destinations. I simply wish I knew someone in these places to show me around so I don't look like a clueless American.

Investing in travel & culture > investing in gadgets and "stuff"

I love to travel, and have been quite fortunate to be able to move to Europe from Canada. For me personally, I'm getting to the point where I don't really buy into the whole consumerist / consumption mentality and would rather spend my extra money on travel and experiences.

I've been to some fantastic places, and my goal is to continue this trend in the coming years. To answer the question directly, the best place I've been recenetly was probably Moscow in May 2008 - I was standing across the river from the Kremlin on the morning of their first Victory Day parade in 15 years. It was an amazing experience.

Once you get the travel bug in you, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

I took a 20 minute drive down to Carpinteria State Beach yesterday afternoon. The beach was PACKED with beautiful women, the weather was perfect, and there was a hometown Brewery right down the street.

It was a great way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon, especially with the great people that I was with

Also, I find more solace in chilling at home with friends than traveling all over the world by yourself or with someone you don't really care about much ( like your boss in my case ) Unfortunately my friends don't have the time to go to different places all the time, even though since I'm a registered travel agent, I could get good deals for flights, hotels, and rental cars.

i haven't taken a vacation in a really long time, however i have the beach and pretty much a very popular vacation spot right here where i live so i guess i justify not going on a vacation with the fact that i live in south florida. i was actually thinking of mentioning to my boyfriend that we should go half on a fancy hotel room right here in south florida for a weekend. just doing that would feel like we went on a vacation even though we didn't really leave. this is where i want to stay. i've stayed there before for NYE and it was sick. it's like 10 min away from where i live.

actually thinking of hitting the beach today. it's beautiful. and the ocean water here looks the same as somewhere in the carribbean or the bahamas so it's all good

probably won't get to do any major travelling until my 30s (like eastern europe and back to japan).

hahaha true! Though like I said, I'm happy to fill my personal space with pictures and memories of places I've been instead of "stuff" that just becomes obsolete/wears out etc.

This is the biggest thing I miss about home. I miss my friends immensely. Just simple things like getting a few people together for dinner & drinks at someones house...such simple moments are not available to me over here. I've made a lot of friends, but not the same kind of friends that I've had for years back home.

Indeed, I've had the same thoughts. started to enjoy life more and care less about little stupid things. like: enjoying time with friends and not caring about what kind of music they like or play, or play at the cafe where we meet. and all the time i've put into things, like a stupid internet forum... damn i nearly lost 3-5 years of my life. and actually as I write this, it comes to me that i'm doing it again (well not so often as I did before)
but to stay on-topic:
i've seen africa/austria this year allready and in june i'm going to spain for 2 weeks

my own friends from down here are pretty flakey but my boyfriend has a really cool crew (all french canadians) and we have them over for dinner at least twice a month. i have so much fun when they come over and we bbq and smoke weed and drink wine and play poker or Wii. it's the best time ever and i would take that over going to some club any day.

i definitely think travelling should be done with your S.O. the only other travel partner i could tolerate is my mom...actually my dad too. i've traveled with both of them and they're great to travel with. especially my dad. he knows where everything is, he's very well traveled.

because i live in Milwaukee and my life revolves around work/school/responsibilities, i have to get out of town every few weeks to keep my sanity... even if it's just a short weekend trip to Chicago or Michigan.

my last "real" vacation was Miami, and that was maybe one of the most fulfilling vacations i've ever had. went by way too fast though.

everytime i wanted to "get away from it all" i would go to new orleans.

now that i'm living in northwest oklahoma, i'm thinking i'm going to have to go pretty far to get to anything remotely decent for a vacation.

although i do already plan on going back to the big easy for my birthday/halloween again this year. more of a traditional thing now; as i've done it the past 3 years.

last time i went, however, i spent so much on hotels, that i limited myself to normal everyday spending money ($100 a day for booze and food). was probably a good idea; considering i still got really wasted and ate really good on that budget.
