My knowledge of Room Acoustics...

Alright folks,

I've been producing EDM for the past year. It's basically a part time hobby of mine, but now I'm going to have more time on my hands, so I'm hoping to get into a bit more.

Anyway, yesterday I moved a few things around in my bedroom, a cupboard and a set of drawers. Now, I never really looked into the study of Acoustics, but from what little I do know, your not suppose to hear Reverb/Resonance if you were to clap your hands for example, right? So, after I'd moved a few things out of my room, I hit the light switch only to notice that it now left a nasty Reverb sound after I'd hit it. Even if I whistle or click my mouth I still hear some Reverb.

Which brings me to ask a few questions:

1. Should I just move my cupboards back in, or should I look into some Acoustic treatment?

2. My room is around 4m x 3m, so how much exactly would I need? Bearing in mind that I don't have a great budget.

3. Correct me if I'm wrong, which I most likely am, but is "Studio foam" not just like normal foam? I mean, do I really have to go and spend hundreds of pounds on this so called High end gear?

4. I have neighbours, so if I were to invest in some Acoustic Treatment, could that somehow reduce the noise they hear from my room? Is this the purpose of "Absorbers"?

That about wraps things up...Unfortunately, I won't be able to provide pictures, and I'm not sure about Diagrams either, as my ceiling is rather irregular in shape.

I'd be very grateful of any help at all. I will try my best to describe the shapes, size etc.. as well as possible. Thanks a million!

Hey Alan, can I ask you to post in this thread (maybe delete this one?) It has a lot of info on acoustics in home studios and keeps it in one place for help for others in the future. Have a look at the list of questions - they help determine what to change and to keep based on your situation....

Hope this helps....

Acoustic treatment will be more effective than furniture.

Even a little can do alot of difference. It's a good idea to atleast cover the side walls near the monitors.

No, it's more dense than regular foam. And no, you don't have to buy foam at all. The best acoustic treatment is actually DIY.

No. You need solid mass and air-tightness to isolate sound. Acoustic treatment will only have a marginal effect on isolation.

Thanks for the answers, Eldritch! Very helpful. I think it's best if I do some study myself, but I still appreciate the response.
