A question: how do you teach your cat to stop jumping everywhere they're not supposed to, i.e. kitchen counters, stove top, dining table, computer desks, etc. ... I have a male kitten who's gonna be six months old soon; we've had him since he was about eight-nine weeks old, so that is about three months now. I got him from a friend who owns both of the parent cats. The kitten is half Turkish Angora and half ordinary American shorthair (I think the type of breed might contribute to the cat's personality and behaviour). We don't know how to train him properly so as not to do these things he is not supposed to do. He likes to jump and climb everywhere, he also likes to climb inside the toilet to drink the water, which is obviously kind of yucky since he then also jumps everywhere else, i.e. the kitchen sink or onto our beds. He is very playful and likes to jump at and try to bite my legs (but I know from reading a cat book that that means that he wants to play so I don't hold that against him, even though it's kinda scary sometimes). Other than that, he is a nice and good kitten, who always likes to keep us company by staying near where we are. One of my colleagues at work, who also has a white male cat, says that she's never seen her cat on a kitchen counter or somewhere where he's not supposed to be, and I know that my friend's cats (the parents of my kitten) also don't jump onto his kitchen counters or beds, so I don't know what we're doing wrong. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks..

It's pretty difficult to train a cat but you might try a spray bottle and water...

They don't like getting wet...

Spraying water is the best bet.

we use a water bottle, but he still likes to lounge around on top of every table
so I just push him off every once in a while

Yeah, I know... but he's not even afraid of that anymore, naughty Angora Although he does jump off if we spray him sufficiently enough, but I feel sorry for him, ending up all wet (plus I'm scared that he's gonna get sick)

My mom read somewhere that "the trick is not to let the cat know that the water came from you", which kind of makes sense... so sometimes, when he climbs into the kitchen sink and his head is sort of under the tap, we try to turn the water on a little bit (making sure it's not too hot or too cold so as not to hurt him)... and he just jumps up and pulls himself out real quickly, but then, as soon as the water is turned off, he goes back in, lol

Yeah, that's what we end up doing too, just picking him up and putting him down.. I think that that's not a very good thing in terms of preventing the behaviour from occurring in the future, but sometimes we just don't have the patience, and he does it several times a row too...

Btw, that video is funny, but I think we'd have to have several of those installed all over the house...

Definitely a spray bottle.

I'm thankful my cat has the world's shortest legs and is inherently kind of lazy, she has made NO effort to get on the counter whatsoever. <3
