Interesting read. There's a lot to be said about how math can fundamentally fail at modeling such complex and chaotic systems, let alone if they are subject to people's irrational and unpredictable decisions. The problem could be that the current frontier of mathematics doesn't do much to help -- it's really easy to end up with problems beyond modern mathematics when you try to model real world stuff. But more likely, there's a fundamental limit on how useful any math can be when you're dealing with unpredictable things. There's a book by Nassim Taleb called The Black Swan, where it says something like 'the importance of some event is proportional to how unpredictable it is'. Or, if you can predict something, than so can everyone else, so it's not truly groundbreaking. I'm guessing that more or less, people use similar methods for automatic trading, and if someone gets an advantage, it doesn't last long.
