1. Any suggestions on a free stereo imager?

2. Also I am looking for a plugin that effectively places sounds in a stereo image to add depth and variation to my tracks. Trying to place perc hits so they come from lets say..upper right at a distance.

3. And, can you cause a sound to be more narrower if it is in mono and centered? Say I want my kick to be even more centered than mono can achieve. Is this possible?

I can't suggest a free one but Izotope Ozone is amazing...it's stereo imager is just great...

for your question 2...upper right and far...to make a sound sounding like it's far, you use reverb and then pan the reverbed signal to the right...

3. actually Ozone has the possibility to go to minus values with the stereo enhancing (so it goes narrowing)...anyway, I don't think it can sound more "mono" than mono if you get me

+1 on the ozone - it's great.

I actually like the (free) stereo imager in logic pro, and have got some great results from it. Just does what it says on the tin, without messing anything up.

As booster said, add reverb to things you want to be further away and play with the wet/dry balance. less of the dry and more wet with careful panning and gain can make it sit further back, and sometimes like a layer above the other instruments. This is great with pads/etheral sounds/choir-ish vocals - jaytech does this a lot on his tracks.

The Waves stereo imaging plug in (forget what it's called right now) is also great but far from free.....

Do remember you can do a lot with just good panning and good mixing. Properly separating the elements according to type, instrument and frequency can really take advantage of the available stereo image.

The new sonalksis one is the best I´ve heard. Not that I´ve that many!
