How do I sound like: Burial

OK, heres a question. How do I sound like Burial?

I'm wondering about his drum sounds especially. I've broken down one of his tracks in ableton to get a feel for where he places the notes, but I'm still wondering how he gets the samples that grungy.

http://www.youtube.com/v/9hI4bSCy9iE&hl=en&fs=1
Thinking about the drum loop from Archangel, I've got the rhythm just right, having broken down the loop into individual hits and arranged them myself. But I can't emulate his sounds. Where do you think he got that first kick drum hit? Its not an acoustic sample I don't think... slowed down 909 or something with some bitcrushing and atmospheric noises?

I'm pretty sure hes also got a bunch of other samples including two types of clicks, a sound like a pipe being hit, what might be a rimshot, and some sort of resonant snare. What do you guys think these sounds are?

Halp?

PS

Incidentally, for all the ableton users, I've found a really efficient way of sampling. You load the track you want bits of into an audio track, duplicate it a few times (cntl d) then put the loop brace around the hit you wanna sample, right click, and hit crop sample. Then you can take that tiny sample and drag and drop it into a drum rack slot. mmm... tasty sample time. I know Live 8 has transient detection for automatically slicing to midi. But This is still proabably going to work better for all those non rhythmic samples.

he gets them from everywhere. truth is i've found them in a sample pack i've had tha i downloaded from limewire like 4 years ago called timbaland ( , i know ). but the hits are fucking awesome. and it comes with kontakt/battery kits

a lot of his stuff is sampled from games too. truth is you can get those sounds is you just get a good mic and sample house hold items

He uses lots of found sounds, for example he uses the sound of a bullet casing hitting the floor which he lifted from Metal Gear Solid.

I'm willing to put my money on the fact that probably 95% of all his tracks are purely sample based tracks. For the bass drums I'd hazard a guess that he lifts them from old records or cuts them from sampled loops, etc.

Lots of processing, not necessarily done by the man himself results in his sound I think, for example he may cut a snare from a D'n'B tune which itself was sampled from an earlier jungle tune, which was sampled from a funk record, which was recorded in the 70's, etc. This all creates subtle coloration and noise over each sample, notice there is often a lack of high end in his tunes? This probably contributes to that grungy sound you refer to, it’s a very warm and pleasing sound and I feel it works well for this style of music.

Since the sounds have been through so much, the only way to really get the same effect is to; a) do it yourself, or b) use samples similar to that anyway.

I’ve attached a sample pack I came across on my travels ages ago. They have a sound to them you may find useful in this project in particular I think you will find the “junk” and “kicks” folder useful. But there are some beautiful snares and hats included too.

If you already have this sample pack, then search the net for more and share them up!

Hope this don’t need a COR version.

Good luck, Lunar.

SAMPLES!

Thanks for the info guys Listening to his stuff, the found sounds option definately occured to me... A few of the archangel hits sound a lot like the NI battery berlin office kit... So thats what tipped me off.

The idea of sampling games is interesting too. Its never occured to me,but I can see how games could be a good place to take samples from.

just be unique and sample your own sounds instead or create your own patch with your choice of sound or synth.

wow im reading that interview, he made his entire album in soundforge!

quote:
Wire: What did you think when people were saying that you hadn’t produced it all in Sound Forge, it’s a scam.

Burial: Who?

Wire: People on the internet, saying he can’t possibly have done that whole album in Sound Forge.

Burial: Really? Yeah well I did. I'll leave those people to their internet or whatever. Yeah I wish sometimes that I’d gone to college to learn music production, but other times I’m like ‘no, fuck, I’m happy I didn’t’.

I don’t really go on the internet, it’s like a ouija board, it’s like letting someone into your head, behind your eyes. It lets randoms in.

Yeah. I've seen that before... But I don't know if thats really consistent with what I'm actually seeing in the waveform displays. Most of the hits are very even, except for a few. I'd say he's more likely using a standard sequencer but shifting the start point of some of the samples out to shuffle them a bit.

Most likey a aphex twinterview IMO.
