WC2002: Qualifying Rules

anyone else think the rules of qualification for the world cup should be changed?
i mentioned in another post that its not right for teams like china to be at the tournament when teams like holland aren't, its bad for the quality of the competition

and this is a quote from an article i read after that post
quote:
Something has to be done about the World Cup qualification rules. When Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and China get into the finals and Holland is left out, there is something wrong

exactly what i was thinking

any thoughts?
how can the rules be changed to ensure the best teams get there ?
or should it stay the way it is?

That quote is total bullshit.
Holland isnt there because they didnt make it up that far, no more discussion possible.
If they played better they WERE there, simple as that it is!
Ireland fucked them, and Ireland must have fucked Spain today, so Holland wasn't that good.
BTW every country of the world minus three got a chance to do the qualification rounds. If you dont get through it, you were not good enough.
And the period from GOLIATH teams are gone, you see what happened to France, Portugal, Argentinia.......
If Holland was there, the same thing maybe happeneed to them.
So why SHOULD Holland be there?

by that same logic you should examine the fact that senegal is ranked 42nd in the fifa standings, argentina is 2nd, and argentina is at home, while senegal is currently in the quaterfinals

tournaments have suprises, thats why we have them, not just let the fifa standings decide....same goes for qualifying, you gotta fight for your right to play in the big tournament, holland just messed up

i would bet a lot of money though that holland will be in the next world cup than china, cuz holland is just a better soccer team, just messed up

is Tunisia in the same group as Holland for qualifications ??

and true say about everything. Europe has the most spots for qualifying because FIFA knows that there's a big soccer power there so if they didn't qualify it's their own fault. The tourney only takes 4 teams from Asia so China qualifying is as hard if not harder than Holland qualifying. Holland should be asking herself why all the weaker teams from Europe are there and not her and not at other continents' teams.

And besides it's called WORLDcup for a reason!

1st, no tunisia is african and holland is european

about the weaker teams, this is the point, 3 good teams (ireland, portugal & holland) were in the same qualifying group whereas another euro qualifying group had maybe no good sides so a shit side automatically got through and holland went out
of course about the big teams being upset by lesser nations, this is were the debate is for me, if the lesser ones didn't get in then there'd be no upsets on the other hand it may raise the standard of the competition

very true, italy beaten by korea today
i think the standard overall is gettin higher

quote:
the world football stage is broadening, thanks to the transfer market and global commercialisation, and improved coaching and training systems

i think this is the reason why, korea have a dutch coach, so the asias are copying the europeans

KarateKid !

this can only be good for the sport tho ..

i don't think nowadays u can necessarily label a team as being shit. if the same teams play each other every 4 years that would get very boring. these upsets are just a sign that the 'system' of soccer is being transferred..

imho a couple more years down the road and games will be as competitive as ever regardless of which teams are in the tourney.

AAGH.... here we go again at it. This has been answered a gazillion times before.

PLEASE PUUUHLEAAZZE go check FIFA's rules for qualifications, you'll see that these rules are the fairest rules ever in any sports, and this makes them also the most complicated ever because of that. Everything, EVERYTHING, is taken into account, nothing is left random.

Buddy just do the god damn math, 32 teams in all, 15 for EUROPE!!! FIFTEEEEEN, in all of Europe there must be something like 50 countries, this including Andorra, Moncaco, Le Man's island and so on. Trust me, if Holland didn't qualify, its because 1-They sucked big horse dick 2- because Ireland were better than them and 3-they got beaten by Ireland and Portugal, All these losses must account somewhere shouldn't they?. Didn't you notice that there's some new teams in this world cup? Well guess what, these teams won their places from over-confident-and-bloated teams. No one here is mentionning Yugoslavia or Czech republic not making it... even tho they're very good. And what happened to Australia? They got beaten by Uruguay, Oceania isn't big/powerful so they have to play a decider against the 5th and last qualified south American team to prove they are worthy... this goes on and on...

Another set of numbers, so you all get the point, Asia has something like 50+ countries. ONLY 2 were allowed to go to the cup which doesn't include of course the hosts. Asia could had a third team, but that team must beat an european team, in that particular cup it was Ireland against Iran... it was close but Ireland won on 2:1 aggregate.

So you see, everyone has it chances to advance, EVERYONE from the smallest country on Earth to the biggest, you just have to win your games, and some teams forgot about it.

I hope this clarifies things and put this stupid argument to an end. Not making the world cup while arguing why China is in it, is just some bullshit to change the focus from your lousy playing.

And never forget, this is the WORLD cup, key word here: WORLD
