Be Cool! [Ibiza Inspired Chillout] Allied Nations - Eivissa - End of July 2006

Allied Nations - Eivissa - July 2006

Had a whole lot of fun making this mix. This was inspired by my trip to Denia and Ibiza during the last half of July. I was only in Ibiza for a short period of time, but was moved by it! Eivissa is Ibiza in Valenciana/Catalan, a regional language with many similarities to Spanish. It just seemed more natural than Ibiza, far less aggressive and in your face. I'd say Eivissa inspired me to do a Chillout mix, whereas Ibiza might inspire a much more hard hitting dance mix. This is a collection of downtempo tunes I've aquired over the last 5 or 6 years. Some have been with me for a long period of time, some a lot less time. I really enjoy how this mix turned out. It's isn't your average dance mix, and I decided not to progress it the same way I would a dance music mix. I wanted there to be many peaks and valleys of energy- a mix for just listening to, rather than dancing to. I've yet to road test this, but I'm hoping this weekend to expose it to a bigger audience, hopefully an audience chilling having some drinks in the sun.

Sit back, Relax, and Enjoy!

1. J-Laze - Ocean Floors

Fun tune, had it for a while now, love the ocean waves and smooth breakbeat. Nice calm tune.

2. Jose Padilla - Sabor de Verano (Way Out West Remix)

What a massive tune. It just makes me thing of the beach and Ibiza. Very very high quality production which made me think of what Ibiza would be like far before I'd ever been there.

3. Le Peuple d l'Herbe - Mr. Nice (Agoria @ Da Control Mix)

For those of you who have heard this, you know it's amazing. Great vocal snippets, amazing piano loop, smooth strings, and a really quality beat. Top level production as usual from Agoria.

4. Rithma - Builder (Kaskade's Lets Make Out Mix)

Great vocal which really makes the tune. Smooth drums and a sexy little guitar that subtly runs through the tune. One of the first tunes I ever heard from Kaskade and was hooked instantly. Older, but great.

5. Rev - What's the Secret

Super minimal sounding beat, with a very clicky kick complimented with some huge pads. Very easy to enjoy.

6. Afterlife - Dub In Ya Mind (Beach Club Mix)

The name of the mix says it all.

7. Mason - Rosado

A slightly melancholic downtempo tune from Mason, known for his massive electro house smashers. The string work on here is amazing and really catchy. A little sad, but hey, its never all roses.

8. Lemongrass - Journey to a Star

What a funky tune. Love the sample and the percussion. Neat older tune from a one of the first downtempo acts I was exposed to.

9. Looper - These Things

Looper has always been one of my favorite electronic projects and this tune is really fun. It's a very musical tune and is very well produced. It's nice and summery and makes me happy.

10. Boards of Canada - Sixtyniner

One of their earliest efforts off the Twoism collection, it sounds very rough and gritty but perfect. Doesn't sound like it was made, but like it's always been there. Perfection from BoC.

11. Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground

Such a timeless tune, it needs no introduction.

12. Paris - It's Time for Peace Street

Paris is a little known [in the mainstream] underground political hip hopper. What's he doing on this mix? Well the track is really hot and the theme is very anti-war and unfortunately during my bout in Ibiza, everytime we were in the hotel room and turned on the TV we heard about more violence in the middle east. Solid tune.

13. The Beta Band - Squares

Kinda lulls you back away from the nastiness in the world- One of my favorite BB tunes, very awesome chorus. Daydream, I fell asleep beneath the flowers...

14. Lemon Jelly - Pushy

I couldn't put together a chillout mix without including Lemon Jelly. I've been listening to these dudes for a long time now and while I am really uninpressed with their last effort, a lot of their old stuff is timeless. This is one of them for me.

15. Sky Spooner - Luckyboy

Almost euphoric. Very interesting percussion and a very pretty vocal. Really feels like you are getting closer to the end of a journery, it's still all good, but it won't last much longer, but aren't you a luckyboy to have been here in the first place?

16. Moby - Whispering Wind

A beautiful tune from Moby which I really think feels the same way I felt leaving the island. Another tune which requires no introduction. Gorgeous.

Cue on its way!

This looks tasty .. Grabbing now.

I have actually met Jose over here in OZ as a girl I know was hanging with him and we ended up having dinner with him. Really really nice guy . I was into some crazy industrial at the time so never really appreciated who the geezer was until some time ago.

This was one vibey mix I must say; I could definitely imagine listening to this in a lounge setting. Hell, this might even pass for being played out in a Starbucks. No less funky, it carries it's veritable mission throughout the summery overtones.

The mixing was in some spots abrupt or weird like the mix into 6 Underground (yet it somehow wound up working) and the mix into Squares was just odd. Pardoning some of the sudden mixes (which I am sure can be thrown out somewhat due to the difficulty of these tunes to mix and your probable lack of experience in mixing these types of tracks) this set is rather nice overall.

7.5/10

Ok, here's the fun bit. I get to explain why the mixing is very... hmm... not good?

THroughout my time in Spain, I had absolutely ZERO access to turntables, and even if I did, I left my FInalScratch vinyls in Peru. I had nothing to mix on, but so much creativity that needed to be released! It was torture. I had nothing to mix or produce on for a month and a half. Hell. I searched all through my protable harddrive to find a utility that would allow me to do SOMETHING. I ended up finding Sony Acid 5.0 and hesitantly installed it on my computer. The mix was painstakingly developed over a three or four day period in and out of houses, cars, airports, and airplanes. Acid is really a shit program to work with for making a full length mix, especially when the tempo varies SO much with these tunes.

I'm not saying this is any excuse, just feel my pain.
