Doors Open 2009 - May 23 & 24

175 buildings of architectural, historic, cultural and/or social significance open their doors to the public. See the Buildings to visit page for our 10th Anniversary bigger and better 2009 roster! Admission is free.

Cultural Services is proud to present the annual Doors Open Toronto — one weekend, once a year — when 175 buildings of architectural, historic, cultural and social significance open their doors to the public for a city-wide celebration.

The program allows visitors free access to properties that are either not usually open to the public, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Many locations have organized guided tours, displays and activities to enrich the visitor experience.

From heritage landmarks to modern structures, hidden gems, green roofs, places of worship, halls of learning, boardrooms, bedrooms, breweries, lighthouses, mansions, museums, theatres, national historic sites, centres of rail travel, cemeteries, factories, banking halls, architects' offices and more.
Doors Open Toronto invites you to get to know the city, whether you've lived in Toronto all your life or you're visiting for the first time. See Toronto like you've never seen it before!

if you have never been to the doors open events before i'd stick to checking out the downtown sites. everything is within a walkable distance.

i'd suggest...

check out one of the buildings with the green roofs.
-401 Richmond Street West
-Mountain Equipment Co-op or
-Robertson Building.
all have amazing views from the top of the skyline. however, i'd check out either the mountain equipment co-op or the robertson building green roof cuz those are private and generally aren't open to the public. 401 richmond you can get access to during the day.

if you want to go high up to see the city, check out...
-Canada Life Building
-Toronto-Dominion Centre or
-Toronto City Hall
you get to go to the top room of the canada life building (17th floor) which is sometimes used as a private event space. for the TD center, you go on a guided tour of the 54th floor which has the restaurant and the board office as well. great views from up top. it's generally busy so expect to wait in line. however, if you want to quickly go up to take a view of the city, check out the observation deck on top of toronto city hall.

some other interesting sites in the core are...
-Commerce Court North (25 King Street West)
-CBC (250 Front St. W)
-Canada Permanent Building (320 Bay Street)
-Carlu @ College Park (this site hasn't been open for a couple of years for doors open, so i expect a lot of people will be here. i was there a couple of weeks ago and it's really beautiful. check out mycarlu set to see what it's like)
-Old City Hall
-queens park
-John St Roundhouse (where steam whistle is)

the 2 transit sites are also really interesting. the ttc is opening up their greenwood yards where they maintain our subways. the eglinton garage will also be open where they service and house a large portion of buses.

and if you're patient enough to wait in line or aren't going to make it to the party, check out the don jail. a really remarkable space.

hope that helps.
