HiFi Speakers vs. Studios

This isn't a typical what monitors should I buy.

At the moment I produce on my sisters old hifi speakers (LG something or other) they are dreadful tbh, 75Hz-20000kHz (quoted on the back) but I am used to them, and can kinda gauge how things will sound else where.

A few months back I was fortunate enough to be given a Denon AMP DRA-455 for free (University Radio Station was throwing it away! Along with a Denon 4 Channel mixer).

Anyway, I been toying with investing in some new monitors, but I figure would my money be best spent on something like these since I am guessing they would probally perform just as well if not out perform a cheap pair of monitors (ala tapco s5's M-Audio, Alesis, etc)

Opinions?

I recently upgraded from hi fi speakers to a set of Alesis M1 520 Active. Love them, no colouring of the sound and a great frequency response compared to more expensive models. Don't spend more than you need to. A good mate uses KRK RP8's and he rated my Alesis very highly in comparison, we also co-produce and can barely notice a difference between the two monitors when comparing the same tune as we work on it.

But if you have a big dedicated room you may need some more beastie monitors, or at last something like Alesis M1 520 / 620 or KRK RP5 / RP6 with a sub as well.

Just my 2p worth

The mercurys are really good hifi speakers for the price but their nothing to produce at IMO, beacuse their made to make everything sound good. Their warm, phatt open etc etc, but their not honest. I produced on Tannoys old Profile series when i first started and i could notice a big difference when switching to monitors even though my monitors are consider crap/cheep. I could now instantly hear stuff like distortion, clipping and bad eqing which the Tannoys somehow magicaly turned in to good anyway. U could get both, its always nice to have a good hifi for reference when ur feeling your track is getting near finished. But get monitors. There are passive monitors out there too which would allow u to use the Denon amp. I almost bought the mercurys myself this winter but instead i build myself some speakers which rock lol.

you would be WAY better off with studio monitors than those tanoys. As above they will emphasize certain frequencies and will not have a flat response. If you are getting decent results with what you are using already, i would say save up for a while longer and get a pair of active studio monitors with a decent response.

A lack of flatness isn't the biggest problem with HiFi speakers. Good HiFi speakers are designed to be flat, just like studio monitors. This is just a common design principle of any decent speaker. The biggest differences are that HiFi speakers are often designed for off-axis performance and they are rarely biamped. Studio monitors are always designed for on-axis use and are almost always biamped. Using active, biamped, speakers offers far better sensitivity and general performance. Passive crossovers suck.

Really?

I am sure you had releases before you got all big fancy monitors?

tbh I am not prepared to invest in several hundered pounds of monitors at this stage of my life.

I welcome the feedback about hifi speakers, I recalled ns10s originally were hifi speakers so figured a tannoy speaker with award winnings from just about every hifi magazine out there must be worth a shot if you can get a pair for so little (£90/pair!).

My friend has the Alesis 520's and tbh they sound nice, might just lump for a pair of them. Anyone notice that low end monitors are very hard to come by now?

Most companies don't carry hardly any these days.

6-7" is the least and the most you should look for, in a 2 way speaker. Anything less won't give you enough bass. Anything more won't give you enough mids.

In my opinion, 6" Behringer Truths, KRK RP6s and Event TR6 are the only budget monitors worth buying. Beyond this point, you might as well save up and get some decent monitors.

I'd say A7s but yeah that is bare minimum and you need treatment as well for the room

Yeah, but they would have been much better had I used proper monitoring. The "good ones" wouldn't have been so far between, as well, I'm sure.
