Five Scales Only

This is a question strictly related to Trance and Progressive Trance/House....

If you could only use 5 scales for the rest of your production career, which five would you choose? Don't please, you very talented producers out there, don't be afraid to say A minor or C major (swallow your pride!)

Major, natural minor, dorian, mixolydian, phrygian.

the root key doesn't matter ... it has minimal affect on the composition

I usually work with vocalists, so regardless of which key I start the song in, we usually end up transposing the whole song up or down until the melody and harmonies are within the singer's range and we try to center it so that she's not spending too much of her time at the lower or higher end of her range.

That said, most of my tracks are written in natural minor (Aeolian), major (Ionian), or Dorian mode. I'm really surprised more people don't use Dorian - it's a nice alternative to natural minor.

I've done a few tracks in dorian ... and I know Sean Tyas is a fan of mixolydian.

I cant believe no one said Bb Natural minor the relative major c# and of course Emin. Dorian mode is so sweet for trance and mixolydian for kinda poppy/funky soundin trance.

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.
