Ignoring the trends: Steve Bug

Fantastic interview with Steve Bug.

For those that don't know him, this guy has been around a long time. He's been putting out music and playing gigs a lot longer than most. Now he's running Poker Flat and Dessous, two really storied and cool labels.

I tend to agree with a lot of what he says about trends and how things have changed over the years. I know I have certainly seen a lot of the same things he mentions.

Anyway, check it out...

Gotta be honest with you mate, seemed a load of bullshit to me.

He says what many people have said many times over, the trend of saying you don't follow a trend is getting old. Just get on with it for fuck sake.

Also

quote:
A lot of stuff that comes out of computer software is pre-equalized and pre EQ’d

Erm lol.

And also

We all know that MP3s are worse quality than WAVs even though a lot of producers and DJs probably wouldn’t be able to hear the difference if you played a WAV and an MP3 back to back. But after a whole night of just MP3s, your ears get tired. You get this feeling crawling in your stomach like something’s not quite right.

If your ear is tuned you can hear the difference though.

How up your own arse can you be?

Yeah, everytime I read these "I can tell the difference between 320k mp3 and wav" statements I want to see these people take blind tests...

couldn't be bothered reading the thread as its like all the others i've read and wasted my time.

Yeah everyone says do your own thing but sometimes what a record company is looking for is what's the hits just now. There only looking to make money of you that's all.

Once your established then yes go back to your roots. As people will follow you then and say wow i like his style.

Why so negative? Yes most of the recordlabels go with the flow, and if you want to make serious money you will probably need to do it too. But the labels dosnt forse you to make music for them, its still your decision whether YOU want to make music for yourself and everyone thats agree with you, or the mainstream to get attention and money.

Yes that's true dream the labels do not force you to write music and yes i write music because i do enjoy making music and hearing people say i like your stuff.

But record labels are only looking after there interest not the other way around.

I mean have you ever heard of a record label making a lose on an artist but keeping them just because they like him or her. NO..
