Mixing without monitor speakers in a venue

have any of you experienced mixing without monitors, or had really bad delay from the club speakers?

How do you mix without monitors? Do you just mix in your headphones? It seems kinda hard eh?

just as a piece of advice, I've mixed infront of the main speakers and I would NOT suggest you ever do that if you value your hearing. I mix in my headphones at home when I record my sets, and that is what I would suggest that you do. Practice mixing with only headphones, record it and listen to what it sounds like compared to your normal mixing. Then practice if there is a difference!

that's what I do aswell. Of course in a club situation I guess (never been so forunate ) you need a very VERY good pair of headphones.

Also most club mixers are Rane's. You cannot hear both records on a rane mixer, only one. So you got to train your ear to not use headphone mix and to just be able to have one headphone on the record being mixed and one headphone on the record thats playing live.

thats what i mean sot. If there is really bassy unclear speaker delay, how the heck are you supposed to mix it?? I can mix within my headphones, or just with one can on my ear, and the other ear listening in on the speakers, but in places where there is a lot of delay, its horrifying.

Try to imagine the worst case scenario at a club or venue excluding the dj equipment. Okay lets see....the tables are shaky, you are set off behind a wall where you cant hear the speakers, but you can hear the bass. What do you do? Do you: a) Mix in the headphones hoping to get it right? (mixing in the heaphones is fine but you wont know what it will sound like on the main system).. or b) Try to mix off the bass with one ear (this has got to be really hard when mixing in because you don't know how much delay there is)

really? harsh.. for the price, you'd think you could.

i love this mixer, you can cue 1, 2, or 3 channels at once, and also use split cueing, which puts the main output in one side of your cans, and the monitor in the other.

you can handle any situation with this mixer..

I've got the PS1000Pro from Gemini, and with this mixer you can cue all four channels at the same time, really cute. But back to the subject, i tried to simulate that situation, so i pumped the volume to a really hard level, and it really is hard to do that, (mixing without monitors), every mix you try to do is off-beat.

So next time when you go play @ a venue, ask 'em for monitors

Yea, but can't you CUE all of the channels on any mixer at the same time. I'm not talking about the cue split thing...
