Understanding Techno

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can really only listen to techno when its being played in a club. I don't enjoy listening to it at home or on my iPod. As a House DJ, I like to think that I have broad tastes and appreciation when it comes to EDM, but techno is one genre which eludes me. Maybe you guys could point me to some classic/great techno sets from over the years, because I think I also need more exposure. Thanks.

Well, to tell the truth, there's an awful lot of bad, soulless and unsubstantial techno released today, so it's not really a tragedy if you don't like today's techno. If you can't stand clubby type, maybe you'll like non-4x4 stuff such as Steve Pickton (Stasis, Phenomyna), B12 (Redcell, Musicology), The Black Dog, Nuron, Kirk DeGiorgio (Future/Past, As One), John Beltran etc. (Youtube it).

I think there's a broad enough spectrum of style of things that are categorically Techno for you to find something to sink your teeth into outside of the club, including plenty of stuff with a nice infusion of House (or vice versa, depending upon how you look at it).

I'm very much fond of Dub Techno, for example, and I find it very well suited to my home and in-car listening experiences.

I'll post some recommendations of my own in a bit.

Please don't make the same mistake I did Youtubin' this track. This is an awful, completely mindless banging deprived of any musicality and substance. I don't know why would anyone listen to this vomit-inducing piece of shit, except for the pre-16 kids who might think everything "harder, faster, stronger" is a musical pinnacle. And please don't mention different tastes, this is just plain awful. This is the stuff that could only repulse people from techno, not attract them.

I've found that many people who hate Techno, have the wrong idea of what Techno is. Most people associate techno with the stuff that's on the Beatport Techno Top 10. That is probably some of the worst Techno ever produced and doesn't represent the genre at all.

I recommend you listen to these sets, and I'm sure you'll see there's a huge difference.

Adam Vana - Live @ Barton Hall 4.17.08
Adam Vana - Live at masquerave (10-25-2008) (4+hrs)
Adam Vana - Timeless (DEMF 2008 Promo)

Those sets are from a guy who posts here at TA, and are a great representation of different types of good Techno.

haha, i appreciate the plug, but just to be clear for others and the OP, i wouldn't really label some of those sets 'techno'. there are bits of techno in each of them, but there many other things too. so if anyone listens to these, please don't listen thinking that they are necessarily "techno".

of those three, the first is probably the most 'techno'
