Ok, so recently I bought some Technics and they came with some Shure whitelabel cartridges. From what I understand these are great cartridges, nonetheless, both appear to be shot. I've been suggested that I could get the styli replaced and that might fix it but I'd rather be sure and start off on a clean slate and get entirely new cartridges (assuming they come with styli, bear with me as I'm entirely new to this).
I priced some new Shure whitelabels and they're $218 for a pair which is a bit much for me right now. I'm wondering if I should be expecting to pay this price for decent cartridges or if there's something cheaper out there that would work about as well. Or should I just go ahead and get the styli replaced on the cartridges I already have?
HALP! thanks

Hi there, do you have your original Technics headshells? If so you could go with the Shure M44-7. Their sound quality is great and they don't require much weight on the tone-arm so wear and tear on your records is reduced and replacement styli are reasonable. You won't regret it!

ohhh, ok, the headshell. Um, nah. Looks like I've just got the old cartridges which have a headshell, but they're the Shure headshells.

hehe nice^ , Maybe its a plan to get some headshells and some Stanton 500Als. They're really affordable and do the job well enough. The white labels are steep so maybe get a fresh pair of styli and only use them for "special" occasions so they last longer and use the stantons for practicing. That's what I'd do!

I think you're wasting money and would be better off just buying replacement stylii.

Word. I'll price that when I go down to ze store on Friday. The cartridges themselves look decent, they need cleaned and are about 4 years old I think, but overall they seem in solid condition.

I know
There's no bass or power with them, but they're Bose and they've lasted for a while. They're also far, faaar down on the list of things I need to spend money on.
But my monitor's pretty tight.

Let's turn this thread into "If I'm looking for something very affordable in terms of cartridges, what should I be looking for".
