Fuck MySpace...get a proper website |
Agreed. There's really no reason to use myspace anymore. If you're looking for a good way to get in touch with lots of people twitter or facebook are far more effective. I think a lot of artists were using myspace because of myspace music. However, soundcloud is 100 times better. It still seems that a myspace profile is the medium of choice for most DJs, but I think that's just because people don't know any better yet.
Don't be too particular about your logo. If you're really serious I recommend finding a professional to make one for you. However, you still don't need to be all that picky. The only important thing is the shape (rectangular), and that people remember it. If you hire a professional you're sure to get these things right.

I've recently been reading a lot of marketing blogs and there are two things that come up time and time again: Consistency and frequency.
Consistency: Your designs have to be consistent across the board. Create a look and stick to it.
Frequency: You need to give people a reason to go to your site. Once they come, you want them to return. The only way to do that is to provide content frequently enough so that people will be encouraged to check back every once and a while.

I think the frequency thing is sort of a beast of it's own. Think about the websites for some the artists you like a lot. How often do you visit them? The sad truth is that people probably aren't going to visit your promo site every day, or probably not even every month. They may still come back, but the frequency of their visits just aren't going to be what it's like for other sites. So you have to adjust your content accordingly.
I think this is a large reason why many DJs don't put as much effort into their websites as they do their social media profiles. If you're on a network that your audience visits every day they're more likely to see all of your updates. I think a main website should be more of a portal. That's what gets people interested in you. This is the thing that comes up first in Google when they search for your name. Once you have their attention you keep them captivated through social media networks.

Hi guys, for me my own website is out of the question right now due to costs(South Africa's internet has some way to go trust me!) and a little impractical as i don't have much content for more than one page just yet.

If your own site is out of the question, you may want to look into getting a domain name and pointing it your myspace page. That would be a good way to start and would be a good way to reserve the domain for the future when you may want to have more than just a myspace page.
