Close call today.

A few hours ago, I was at work when I got a call from my home security company telling me that someone tried to break into our home. Our home alarm system is monitored 24/7 by the alarm company and they notify me immediately if the alarm is triggered. They dispatched an officer and I got home about 15 minutes later to find that they had tried to pry my front door open with something and ripped the trim/molding apart, which set off the alarm. The in-house alarm is VERY loud (and I mean painfully loud) - that sent them running like the worthless cowards that they are.

So, aside from my door frame needing to be replaced (probably a few hundred $ in parts/repairs), nothing was stolen or damaged. It's a good thing too, because I have a lot of hardware gear, but more importantly, having my computer stolen would be a gigantic PITA.

The officer told me that the department has been responding to more burglaries this summer than they've ever seen - 1 or more each day, all in broad daylight (i.e., while people are at work). And we live in a fairly nice middle class neighborhood. Our next-door neighbor was robbed while she was at work just early last week. She had cancelled her home security a while ago because, after years of living in a relatively crime-free area and never having been robbed, I guess she figured she didn't really need it - she resumed the service the very next day, but only after having several TVs, her computer, all of her jewelry, etc. stolen.

So, anyway, I'm posting this not just to get your pity ( ) but just as a reminder to do what you can to protect your gear. If you have the option of an alarm, use it. Make sure your gear is covered by insurance and itemized, photographed, documented, etc. Make it a point not to advertise where you live and that you have lots of gear. Feel free to throw out more suggestions.

yeah man wow, thank god my place is covered by ADT, so i'm safe and lol at the running like cowards

well at least all your shit wasn't taken i all ways back up any samples i make worth keepin on disk. but i have learned owning software and media is a nightmare waiting to happen. and can either crash,breakdown or get nicked.i even keep some of my stuff stored a the parents house just incase.

Crime-rate goes up because....

You got lucky. Thats good stuff. Thief didn't know what he/she was doing.

Thats why I have cameras (they record), several guns and someone is always there. Plus dogs alert when anyone even gets close to my properties.

Hearing these stories always scares me because so it's easy for someone to break in to your house (especially when it's unprotected, like mine). I don't have any expensive gear but if my computer got stolen... well my new HDD is in there and it contains my entire music collection which would be a devastating loss. Also all the expensive software I have, not to mention irreplaceable photos, etc. My entire collection of text files, I have some really old text files. One of them is still the way it was in 1988. A lot of stuff about hacking and piracy, viruses, programming, some recipes for bombs and other destructive objects, etc. There's all of my movies... tons of videos downloaded off of YouTube, some of which have been removed already... a folder with a bunch of fakebooks... all the stuff from my video games... food recipes which I've made myself, I couldn't remember them all if I lost them...

Damn... I have a lot to lose in just one little box.

Well, even if he/she/they had picked the locks or tried to go through a window, that would have set off the alarm as well. There's a 30-second period from the time any door is opened until the alarm deactivation code must be punched in during which time the alarm is noticeably beeping, then the alarm goes off. If a window is opened or broken while the alarm is set, it goes off instantly. So, regardless whether they pried the door open, picked a lock, or tried to come in through a window, the alarm would've gone off. Best case scenario (for the burglars) is that they picked the lock and grabbed what they could as quickly as they could. Most likely, they'd use that 30 seconds to grab our 52-inch LCD TV in the main room - that's the first valuable item they'd see and they probably wouldn't even have time to locate the studio in a such a short time, nor would they have any reason to look for a studio unless they knew me personally and had been to our place (very unlikely).

Your very lucky, my father's clinic was broken into years ago and they took the front computer which didn't have much (basically forums, and MediSoft, reports and stuff too). We had an alarm but, they cut the phone line so no calls went in to see if it was an actual emergency or false alarm. My guess is that by the time police were there they actually made off with it.

I can't imagine what would happen if someone stole my laptop or my limited gear I'd cry endless tears.

blame it on the economy yeah and everything else. this society for the most part is f&%ked. so much for a so called Utopian one. I think that just about every problem that is faced in society is due to money.

But still regardless of what people need to do for money its still a matter of respect on the other party that is warranted ( the victim). But its a tuff world.

Cryo im happy that nothing got taken for you mate, i have been broken into before and lost a lot of stuff, no music gear however (wasn't into it then), but its feel like you have been violated.

Get some cameras too like Numb said - better safe then sorry and for the price of them why not?

Nice. I'll probably need one of those some day, but for the time being all I have is renter's insurance. I'm also as covert as I can be and am wary to mention exactly how much my studio is worth/what's in there to anyone who knows or could find out my exact address. I could be right next to you and you wouldn't even know it.

Another bonus, all my gear is bolted in to racks. Would make someone wanting to get in/out in a hurry think twice. And what isn't bolted down, aside for the PC, is quite heavy.

The criminal needed to setup a wifi scrambler, and cut the connection to the grid...alarm is now moot.
