I've always wondered something about world track competitions-let's say you shatter the world record in the preliminary heat, but do not proceed past the semi finals for example. I'm assuming its possible to absolutely destroy a world record w/o even getting a medal if this is true. It seems like the in the vast majority of races in which people break records is in a final, so these cases aren't a common occurence.
