Any suggestions of what to get?

I have been fooling around with Virtual DJ for about 4 months now, but I'm ready for something more hands on. I can't decide rather I should get a pair of CDJs and a mixer or if I should just get a controller. Problem is I live in an apartment with limited space and really can't blast my music as I'd like to. I also can only spend $600-800. I ask myself if I see myself going to play at parties, but I'm not really sure..if it were yes, would everyone agree on CDJs?

What options do I have with that money? (Controllers and CDJs)

The main thing I enjoy right now is just making mixes...

Thanks in advance

With that kind of wallet there are two alternatives:

Save more, I know you hate to hear it but you have no idea how much this will cost you in the end. You might think you only need 2 CDJs and a mixer but you also need:

* Monitors (you could go with whatever speakers you already have but eventually you will want to get monitors)

* Headphones (using the ones you use for you computer will eventually blow your ears. The better the quality the lower you have to set the volume, just get good ones)

* Music (sure you might have access to a really good d0-torrentsite, but unless you have, you will want to get the newest music, and that will cost you. You also want to get a unique library, which only money can buy, finding obscure songs on the illegal download sites is hard)

* CD (having CDJs means you will burn your music down. Also remember that you will probably get into the habit of only burning one song on every CD, this is what DJs do, and there are a lot of benefits. It's easier to catalouge it for one

* And don't forget your cables!

So, what to do?

Get a MIDI-controller. I recommend you get either Numark Omnicontrol with the DJiO soundcard or Vestax cheap ones, don't remember. If you can afford it get the new NS7, don't know what it costs, but it seems sweet!.

This will cost probably you half of your budget. You will also sort of get the feel of 'acctually DJing', which means you won't get bored easily.

It's your choice. Personally I was in your current situation for a long long time, we're talking years. Eventually I decided to go with the MIDI-controllers. Then a year later I got two Numark TT200's and a 5-channel Numark FX5000 mixer, which means I now combine Vinyls and Mp3 in one cheap but awesome setup. Maybe that's something for you? Get the MIDI-controller while you save up for the real stuff. You don't want to be stuck in the keyboard-and-mouse trench for too long, trust me

Cables, if you need them, from monoprice.com. Make a list of what you need and save on shipping when you buy 'em all together. =)

VCI 100 is a great option for a MIDI controller.

Dude, get some CDJs.

Learn the art form, sure it might be frustrating to start with but you will get so much more out of it.

Ignore the stuff about torrents, don't do it, it's pretty shitty towards the artists in an industry that already pays them jack shit (trust me I know) anyway.
Not to mention that music downloaded illeagaly isn't always of the best quality.
And you don't have to spend a fortune on music. If you buy tons of tracks its very easy to become overwhelmed and you never really have any connection to any of the tunes you buy. Buy tracks with a purpose and make sure they fit what you are about.

These days I burn ten tracks on a CD all in the same key and then carry two copies of it just in case I want to play two tracks from the same CD. Saves money on CDs and means I can carry soooo much more music with me. Took me a while to work out a sensible system to catalogue it but it's done now.

Learn to DJ for real, don't sell yourself short by going virtual. If you decide that its for you then years down the line you will be glad you did get CDJs. Trust me on this.

Cheers
Nem

In case you're refering to my post, I don't defend piracy in it, just wanted to make that clear.
