robbed this off the ableton forums...

Try this on your Master channel:

Insert a Utility - set width to 200%
Right click on that utility and click group - you should now have a rack.
Insert another chain in the rack - leave this empty

And thats it. Ive definetly noticed a "widening" of the sound and i dont think its a placebo effect. Also it doesnt interfere with mono compatibilty either from what i can tell.

sure it's widening...

but it affects the overall phase. And 200% is quite dangerous. Besides that you can't do this on any sound/frequency.

150% on mid-high and high frequencies only, and a double check with mono compatibility by inserting utility with the spread at Zero on the master channel.

But yeah, good point here.

You can do racks with about anything and add what ableton's missing: parallel compression, special fx, etc...

I gotta show you all, when I get the time.

And you're wrong. It does affect mono compatability. THe way these widening utilities work is by reversing the phase of one of the channels. If I were you I'd trust airwave, he might have some idea

well you should check it out on an wave analyzer. As i agree with Lolo on this one yeah of course your going to here it spread more and it will sound nice but it will create alot of anti-phase.

i would load up the analyzer and then adjust your insert to suit.

i guess it does sound cool but why would it be a bad thing incase your tune is being played in mono? i use stereo widening effects in a few tunes usually straight on a sound not on the overall mix is that also a bad thing?

Antiphase is a bad thing on tracks because it means that when they're played in mono the two channels cancel out, leaving an overall lower volume.

Good use of panning > stereo widener tools.

To my ears most of the time, anyway.
