it either needs a shot of compressed air to clean it or the fader is simply worn out

my friend's djm 600 had the same thing with the booth monitor knob

I had the exact same problem at one club that I used to play off. The slightest touch to the booth monitor know and POP! Basically there ended up being two settings for the monitors - on and off.

Hell no

Never, ever, get wd40 near a fader or pot.

Isopropyl alcohol aka switch cleaner aka fader fluid should do it, unless the contact surface is shot, then it needs a whole new fader.

not too expensive if so and only basic knowledge of soldering required.

A friend had one of the very first DJM500 mixers in the UK and within 3 months the headphone pot started to crackle.

Cheers. Wasn't sure on using wd40, I've never tried or recommended using it for this purpose and was just wondering if it was ok or not.
