Huge, recognisable hooks are great.
There are a lot of great sounding trance songs which have no hook, and that's okay. But I do love songs with massive hooks, where you only need to hear a second or two to recognise it - songs like Ferry Corsten's "Punk", Public Domain's "Operation Blade", ATB's "9pm (til I come)" and so on...
riff is such a poorly defined term. of course there are great sounds out there that somebody might consider a riff and of course people like them. there are (this goes for anything right now) much more bad "riffs" out right now than good ones tho (by a long shot)
