What is your opinion of the music and/or DJ's this past year?

I feel like I saw a lot of commercial DJ's that blew up last year decrease in popularity and put out shit music this year. If booked, they still draw huge crowds but they hype (and quality for that matter) went down.

"Underground music" or "Less commercial music" seems to have improved a lot more. Maybe because my taste in music has continued to change.

Just looking for your thoughts or opinions. Hopefully this discussion brings up talented people that may be interesting to myself or others.

I have a hard time finding "underground" trance artists, but 2008 had more um... Amazing music? And better parties, and better live sets....
A few great albums came out but not a whole
lot... Most of the great tracks are by artists that aren't really that big
please give suggestions for trance and other types of music I might like.
And who is the best example

thats what the goal of NIKITA was at Circus. To bring in those underground trance djs. Simon Patterson, Sean Tyas, John Askew, Jon O'Bir, etc... LMD is doing a good job of keeping that up.

Avalon does a GREAT job of bringing talent associated with techno, house and even some psy. Paco, Bill Patrick, Audion, etc...

now back to subject at hand. any other opinions on the music this past year?

EDM got way too commercialized and it's officially now "cool," "hip," and "in." lol Hip hop/Top 40 are fucking it up for us diehards. Everyone and their mothers listens to EDM now.

On the flipside, it's good for the producers & promoters cause now they can make bank by targeting a bigger audience.

But just like it did in the early to mid 90's, it's gonna die quick!

Seems that many of the top DJ's are bypassing the clubs in LA as of late, or maybe I'm just too impatient for them to come back (Above & Beyond, anyone)? They seem to spin in NorCal and SD more...maybe it's LAX, one of the worst international airports in the world...I read once that many Europeans visit the States once and they're done after that experience!

Gareth and Menno were great at Vanguard, but Circus has been the bright spot of EDM music for me...many awesome up and coming DJ's, and DJ's who are popular elsewhere but don't have so much exposure here. Cressida, for example, is one of the bedt DJ's I have heard at any club, Matthias' set was mind-blowing! . Tatana and Anthony Pappa were also amazing, and they have some of the best locals too, like Cowboy Mike and Norin & Rad.

Still cannot get into House unless it's Digweed, Sasha or the like. Gave Benassi and Guetta a try at EDC, but nope, just doesn't do it for me.

Wonder what NYE will bring us? (there's another thread for that, I know...)

This might be wayyyy off base for what people on TA think is house... but it's where it originated... and believe it or not there is a massive underground scene for these producers/artists in SF. (they just wouldn't be caught dead posting on this forum... except for me )

This is probably wayyyy weird for people who are on TA, it's more funky, disco, old school type of house. But it's a big scene out here in SF that gets passed by by a lot of you because it's never posted on here. There's a lot of underground parties that happen here every weekend that are AWESOME. awesome crowds, great dancers, and typically just drinkers. (shit normally clears out by 2am. lol) It's the type of event you would go to where everyone seems to know everyone, and they tape a big peice of linoleum to the ground for all the fantasitc dancers/break dancers. Great vibes. I suggest you go and check it out one of these days.... you would understand what "house" really is here in SF besides the CHEEEEESE artists like Guetta or Kaskade or Benassi... pssssh. The closest thing I could think of musically to the artists mentioned above would be certain days/nights at the endup. my two cents

I think Bingo Players and Afrojack are two of the most forward-thinking production teams to come out recently.

I would agree with Lyndsay that Joey Youngman aka Wolfgang Gartner and Eddie Amador are two of the best house music producers to ever live.

I just spoke with Eddie last week and told him of my intention to remix "Rise" and he was really excited about it. We were supposed to collaborate on some tracks this summer, but my DJ schedule wouldn't allow for it. I hope to get some time for that soon.... Eddie rocks.

He used to play a lot in LA as Joey Youngman at Balance @ King King. I'm sure in a few years he'll return as Joey Youngman and rock a set for you Lyndsay
