Why is trance embarrasing?

Something I've been thinking of for several years is that it seems like alot of trance producers themselves are ashamed of trance. In interviews they are often very eager to point out that they do not listen to trance. How often do you hear or read that a producer listens to trance music? I for one can't recall it at all through all the years. I remember in an interview with MIKE he said that he liked Justin Timberlake alot. Some producers don't even want to label there music as trance (PvD etc).

People in other scenes have no problem with this but trance people seem to be embarrased with being associated with trance music.
Are you ashamed to mention that you listen to trance? Or have you heard of any trance producer that have ever said that he listen trance?

Would be nice to hear some thoughts on this.

Because trance has like taken over for euro-dance.

People ask me what music i listen to, and im like "Trance" and their like "oh.." because they instantly associate the music with commercial dance music from the radio.

Or I ask someone what music they like, and they say "Trance" i ask them what artists they like and they start mentioning artists such as Cascada, Brooklyn Bounce, or some other mindless crap.

I think what is considered Trance is just so widely varied and different now, that nobody wants to be associated with it.

Reminds me of that one Sasha & Digweed interview a while back where they claimed they never played anything trancey or epic or whatever.

Trance is to Music what Weed is to Drugs

Everyone tries it at least once. Some never try it again, some move onto different music but will fall back to trance if there's nothing else and some never stop and its the only thing they listen to.

Many producers and artists tend to stay away from the word 'trance' due to the many negative associations the word has developed with the world of drugs etc...

its purely marketing in my opinion... PvD and Tijs stay away from 'trance' because of precisely this... Armin van Buuren has a lot of branding associated with the word 'trance' (ASOT etc) so he cant just drop it all...

basically i feel it has less to do with embarrassment and more to do with the fact that they dont want to market themselves as such

i find that most people stereotype trance with drugs, raves, happy hardcore noises, loud basses, no vocals, and pure repetition.

it's in fact the exact opposite of what trance is. well, at least for me.

i think in order to listen to trance takes a patient mind, a well-tuned ear, and an open mind for listening to music that is often +5-8 minutes longer than your typical 3-4 minute song.

so for me, i love to talk to others about my liking for trance.

Trance has become like that one kid at school that isn't popular at all but you get to know him/her and they're actually really cool but you still can't be seen with them because they are unpopular.

I think PvD is great but it's just absurd that he says he doesn't make trance, just music that is "usually danceable" . Although I will admit some of his stuff isn't quite so trancy, most of it is.

I, for one, am not embarrased to say I like trance. I had to stop saying I like Electronic Dance Music because people always say "So... you mean like techno?". Techno is great but it's certainly not my favorite. Now I just say trance even though I know they immediately think basshunter, cascada, etc. I know what I like and that's really all that matters.

In conclusion, trance shouldn't be embarrassing. It's really a shame that people think of it like that.

Could be worse. When I first got into EDM I thought Brooklyn Bounce were prog house

The problem is that so much shit is produced under the 'Trance' label that it makes it easy for people to talk bad about it.

Another way to look at it is... Trance parties get the biggest crowds/have the most pull and for some it's a jealousy thing. It's almost always the fans of the other sub-genres bitching about Trance -- rarely is it ever Trance fans bitching about other sub-genres of EDM.

Haters will remain haters - just enjoy the music you like and don't worry about what the other guy is listening to.
