Take a trip over to the DJ Booth and you'll find endless threads about vinyl vs digital, and the validity of Ableton/Traktor as a DJ tool. Everyone has a different opinion on the matter, but it seems as though the general consensus is that DJing without some level of hands on control is just no fun and produces stale sets.
It amazes me how often this is debated in DJing, but how it's hardly ever brought up in producing. Newcomers to production are so accustomed to downloading a copy of Reason or FL and working from there that they totally fail to realize that, until the last decade or so, electronic music was largely created with hardware.
You won't find many people who prefer to DJ with a keyboard and mouse on Ableton. So why is it that producers so often prefer to write music in the exact same way?
Go buy a MIDI controller with a shitload of knobs. Better yet, go buy a second hand hardsynth and a cheap MIDI interface. Or a machinedrum or other rhythm composer. Get SOMETHING you can put your hands on. Stop arranging and start recording.
