Dynaudio BM5a

Anybody use them here?

I'm looking at several monitors to upgrade to from RP6 G2s and any of them are going to have more then enough bottom end for a home sized, relatively untreated space so my main criteria is detail. I want much more detail.

The BM5a's are at the very top end of my budget and so far the only real alternatives are Adam A7s and Mackie HR824s

Yea I use them. Imho they are by far the best ones you can get in that price range. I tested them next to the Adam A7 and they came out ahead. They are also slightly more clear than the Mackies too.

I actually also have the KRK RP6 (for my DJ setup) and the clarity of the Dyns to the KRKs is incomparable. The Dyns are lightyears ahead.

EDIT - You won't find too many people opposed to Dyns, even if they don't have them. Dynaudio are known industry wide for quality, top of the line monitors. The BM5a and BM6a are favourites for many musicians

Get the adams. You can later add a sub if you got a tuned room. The dynaudios got that digital tc electronic crossover they suffer from that sharp sound.
Adams cost more to make I used to own BM6As. Sold them.
Lesson learned. Don't by speakers unless you can hear how they sound.

Here's another gem of advice, ignore anything and everything Existo22 says.

Listen bitch-boy. I owned the BM6as. I bought them coz everybody was raving about them, and they were being pushed as great monitors in magazines. They sounded like ass. They got a digital TC electronic crossover. The components inside are nothing to write home about either.
Big profit for the dealers is Dynaudio speakers. Adam audio speakers = less profit for the dealers.
Adam speakers cost more to make!

And with a nice sub you get high quality full range monitoring.

So fuck what you thought.

Yeah, I think you lost all credibility with that tips thread you made. Clearly whatever monitors you're using, you still can't hear very well because your production advice sucks.

What production advice bitch-boy? :/
These were not my tips by the way. More or less general knowledge from audio engineers around the world with successful record releases.

Hi

I tested the Adam A7`s against the Bm6`as in an acoustically treated room with "Psy Trance" and "Deep chilled psy" and found the Bm6`a definitely had a warmer, more bass rich sound.

The Adams definitely lack the bass quality the Bm6`s had but the mid range and higher frequencies where by far superior on the Adams. This is probably due to the Ribbon technology they use in their tweeters which, in my opinion are second to nothing in this price range (and some above the price range as the BM6`s are).

So i guess if you want a nice round bass overall get the BM5`as if you want an all round sound which is slightly lacking in bass get the Adams. Anyhoo to help here are some comparisons of the 2.

BM5a : £404.01 Each inc Vat
Adam : £324.50 Each inc VAT

BM5A : Frequency Response (+/- 3 dB): 50 Hz - 21 kHz
Adam A7 : Frequency response: (+/- 3 dB): 46 Hz - 35 kHz

Now i could put all the other nice scientific facts here about them but those are the important ones and the power output also but i aint going to do that as i firmly believe that LISTENING TO THEM with some of your own production or at the very least music you are trying to produce is the only TRUE way to get an ACCURATE idea of how they SOUND.

Hope i helped somewhat,

Mark

Thanks for all the responses.

I was hoping that no other options came up in this thread and thankfully that's happened

There's really little other option for me now except to pop over to DV and A/B the BM5s against the A7s and just going for the one I prefer the sound of.

Thanks again for the advice

You can get the adams and the adam sub for about the price of the bm6a so you can have a dedicated sub for the lower frequencies
Much much better sound this way...

Less profit for dealers too
