NI audio 2 dj VS I-mic

I know the title sounds a bit bizzare but there is reasoning for it.
I have an apple i-mic that I was using to record sets onto my laptop from my mixer.
Recently I have begun to teach myself how to produce, and I bought a pair of KRK R5 speakers, but what to connect them with for sound? So I switched the wire on the imic to output. Two things I have noticed have happened:
A: Sound only plays on the speakers when using WMP to play my media files, however when listening to playback on Cubase, it still comes through the laptop speakers.
B: The sound on the speakers is not nearly as half as loud as i know it can be when say i hook my speakers up to my mixer.
Is there a way to address these issues, or does it look like I need to go and grab a soundcard like the Native intrsuments audio 2 dj?
Thanks in advance for the help, I'm still pretty green when it comes to all this stuff.
