Hardtrance legend Chris Menzi answers the Q&A’s





Where did it all start for you?
I hear long long time ago some captain jack and other eurodance acts. I was fascinated from the sound and soundstyle.

Where did the name come from?
I was inspired by tracid traxx, kai tracid was a great producer long time ago.

What gave you the initial push?
My first try to play on a synth.

Who would you say was putting on the best events at the moment?
I can't say, i was more a producer as a dj. I dont often go to parties.

Which other countries have you played?
I have in the past a lot of booking request from all over the world (usa/the netherlands/uk/germany), but im only a producer, not a dj. I learned the dj act with vinyl, but i haven't enjoyed it so much. I like more to produce sounds and tracks. Sometimes i made small live acts in switzerland. My (I think) last is to be 2010 in switzerland.

What was the first event you ever played?
A Party here in Switzerland, more then 4000 clubbers.

What’s the best event you’ve ever played?
I like more the smaller club-partys. I have played in a small Club here in the switzerland, not more then 200 people. But after I have played as dj, we have a big party in the club with a lot of fun and girls... :-)

What was your first record you bought?
I don't no. Some Ferry Corsten vinyl... Or Kai Tracid? I don't know.

Out of all the tunes you have, which one does the business every time?
I like the flutlicht & shokk productions, but only the old one from marco guardia. I think he was one of the biggest producer of all time.

What's your favourite tune of all time, the ultimate classic?
Robert Miles, Children...

And when all the partying is over, how do you like to relax?
Sleep, sleep and sleep.

How is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
I don't like the trance scene at the moment. A lot of trance track haven't a soul. I miss the great Melodys from the past. I remember some old classic trance tune, like the orange theme, or binary finary. The great melos for big emotions...

How big is your vinyl collection? What is your opinion on CDJ's? (the pros & cons)
small and smaller. I sell the most of my vinyls. Only my favorites left. CDJ's was okay. I think it's normal at the moment. But i think, the black gold, the vinyl is important and I hope it stays around.

The funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
I was meant to play at an party, but they wouldnt let me in – I wasnt on the entry list, I had to call a friend in the club to get me in!

Other DJs you rate?
A lot of DJ's inspired me. But only from dj's producing themself.

Who is/are your biggest musical influences in the world of music & why?
From a lot of producer. Like Wiliam Orbit.

What are your feelings on the MC's?
Nothing for me. I haven't good experience with MC's...

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
I was graphic and web designer. Thats my job (www.menzi-mediasolutions.ch). And i'm a big fan of sci-fi and actions films.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Mc's/Promoters?
Begin with producing, or going to a studio and producing tracks. Thats the only and right way to have success in the scene.

If you could stage an event anywhere, where would you choose?
On mars. :-)

How do you see the scene 5 years from now?
I hope more in the pop-business as in the dance-scene. I like the club-tracks, but after long time to producing eveytime the same, I like to produce new and fresh tracks. I like fatboy slim, or wiliam orbit productions. I think, this is my future in producing. But I don't stop my trance productions. Some tracks I will release in the future, as I still like to produce trance/hardtrance.

If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?
Not the past, the future interests me. I like the technology-jump from last year. I'm fascinated in the graphics from games and movies.
