Another HST Thread....

Old link...but still relevant.

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/O...6725/story.html

So 70% of Ontario residents oppose the HST, yet its still going through. Who says we live in a democracy? What was the point of the poll if McGuinty already had his mind made?

I still dont see how consumption taxes create jobs

I sent an email to my MPP Liberal Bob Delaney today. I watched the vote on TV today to ensure that he did in fact vote in favour of the HST before sending this email.

[email protected]

Subject: Harmonized Sales Tax

Greetings Mr. Delaney,

This is the first time I have directly sent an email to your attention because of the urgency I feel regarding the proposed Harmonized Sales Tax.

This new tax does not represent the will of the people that you represent. You voted in favour of this tax today, which according to many surveys conducted across Ontario, is not the will of the citizens.

I strongly urge you and the Liberal party of Ontario, to stop this tax, and introduce it in a time that is more appropriate than during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

If you proceed with the tax, I would suggest that the income tax rate be lowered and frozen for a period of time to be determined, for all Ontarians, and a reduction of the HST from 13% to 10%.

As I am sure you are well aware of, the introduction of this tax comes just over a year before the next election in Ontario. The citizens of Ontario will not forget or forgive the introduction of this tax before that time has expired. I have no doubt that this tax will strongly negatively effect the popularity of you, your party, and you parties leader. Instead of making increases to taxes, why not start making some cuts to social programs? Spending has increased at an alarming rate under the leadership of Dalton McGuinty.

Please stop the introduction of this tax.

I would be happy to discuss this issue with you further, please feel free to reply to this email address or call me at *edit*.

Sincerely,

*edit*

I in no way support this, but I hope you also sent a similar message to Jim Flaherty's office. This is his baby and he has literally bribed the provinces into it. Unfortunately, McGuinty's felt the instant cash was worth selling out the people of Ontario.

In Canada, you vote for a candidate, and count on him or her to make decisions for you... this is the democracy... you don't vote on issues, you vote for a person.

Polls don't determine what a government will do, not in this country, not in any as far as I know. They may influence, but do not determine.

As far as why polls are made after the fact... to feel the waters after the fact. Governments need to know how much of an ass they look like from time to time, especially after setting new or contravercial policies.

It is the feedback mechanism that makes democracy work though. Whomever represents your area is obligated to be the voice of your people. When 70% (an overwhelming majority) oppose legislation, it should like you say, influence the decision. This isnt a 50/50 split.

McFinky makes Bob Rae look like a saint... i never thought it could get any worse than the NDP...

Harmonize the taxes at 10% and exempt gasoline and heating products...

otherwise this is a complete tax grab

When the atlantic provinces did this they lowered their sales taxes at the same time.

the real world and the political world are two different things

How often does your MP or MPP vote against their party....rarely to never...if they do it will be political suicide.
