little win2000 help with sound

ok, as it turns out, i'm one of those people who think they are good at computers, but they actually should be kept FAR AWAY from any electronic devices, because anything i touch tends to stop working for no apparent reason.

ok, so back on topic, i find it really annoying how in windows 2000 professional you can hear absolutely every sound. so like if i'm listening to winamp and someone sends me an instant message, i can hear the sound from the IM which didn't happen under win98. please, how can i turn that off so only 1 program at a time can use the sound card? sorry for the bragging.

speakers off. problem solved

is it the same as using ME or 98 where you go to control panel >> sounds >> (uncheck the boxes for which sounds you dont want)

in AIM there sound be a place for you to disable sounds. If you are desparate enough you will find it or find a way to turn it off

solution if you have a sound blaster live:

start >> programs >> creative >> soundblaster live >> Audio HQ

Double click on Device Controls

see the "Wave" tab? click it. (If you dont see a wave tab, you are SOL)

slide maximum simultaneous wave outputs to 1.

If you have a different card, it should be somewhat similar. . . just a setting you have to change. Sometimes you dont have the option to change it though. . . I dont know why though (yet)

hope this helped
