You are absolutely right about envelopes and it will cause pops even though he said it was his speaker.
Another thing you cant forget too are compressor envelopes. *Especially the attack & release not set right with kicks. If there is any silence in the front or back of the kick sample the compressor pushes the silence untill it basically makes that sharp low popping sound.
